Seasonal Celebrations of English Apples and Cider
in the Herefordshire Parishes of the Marcle Ridge

National Moth Night Saturday June 7th 2008
This year Butterfly Conservation has specified Orchards as one of their chosen targets. Since none of their target species are a realistic proposition in Herefordshire and their target habitat, orchards, is a key element of the Herefordshire Countryside, the Butterfly and Moth group ran an event centred at Awnells Farm in conjunction with The Big Apple.
The Schedule
7th June: 1000-1200 Explored the habitat identifying as many life forms as possible, concentrating on Butterflies and Moths but also made other lists of Flora and Fauna.
1200-1400 This is The Peak activity time for The Red Belted Clearwing Moth and tried to lure this rarely seen moth to Pheromone lures.
1400-1600 Searched the Orchards for 'Celypha woodiana' mines in the mistletoe.
1600-2200 Set up time for Moth trappers.
2200-0400 Moth trapping. Mainly at Awnells but other traps at two other sites.
Everyone was welcome to watch the moths come in at Awnells for as long as they liked and 'The Catch' was available for viewing at 0900hrs on Sunday morning prior to its release.
8th June: 0400-0800 Total up the catch and pot up specimens. Rest.
0800-0930 A breakfast barbecue and viewing.
All records will be forwarded to Butterfly Conservation and the National Analysis will be published eventually in Atropos, an entomological journal. It should be a great opportunity to see lots of moths and other things and to make a genuine contribution to the National knowledge of our lepidoptera.
